What is a Meniscus Tear?

What is Runners Knee?

Runners knee – an aching pain around the kneecap that is not just for runners. Any activity that causes you to bend your knees a lot, like walking, biking, and jumping, can cause runner’s knee .

Runner’s knee isn’t a specific injury. It’s a broad term that describes the pain you feel if you have one of several knee problems. For example, chondromalacia patella, a condition in which the cartilage under the kneecap breaks down, can lead to runner’s knee symptoms.

Runner’s knee can happen for several reasons:

Overuse. If you do a lot of repeated bending or high-stress exercises, such as lunges or plyometrics, they can irritate your knee joint.
A direct hit to the knee, like from a fall or blow.

Your bones aren’t lined up (called malalignment). If any of the bones from your hips to your ankles are out of their correct position, including the kneecap itself, that can put too much pressure on certain spots in the joint. Then your kneecap won’t move smoothly, which can cause pain.

Problems with your feet, such as hypermobile feet (when the joints in and around the feet move more than they should), fallen arches (flat feet), or overpronation. They may change the way you walk, which can cause knee pain.

Weak or unbalanced thigh muscles.The quadriceps muscles in the front of your thigh keep your kneecap in place when you bend or stretch the joint. If they’re weak or tight, your kneecap may not stay in the right spot.

It’s not just for runners. Anyone who spends time doing things that make you bend your knees a lot, like walking, biking, and jumping, can get runner’s knee, an aching pain around the kneecap. It’s also called patellofemoral pain syndrome.

  • tight leg muscles
  • uneven leg muscle strength
  • misaligned feet, ankles, and legs
  • obesity
  • shoes without enough padding
  • hard playing surfaces
  • chronic diseases that weaken the tendon
  • Athletes are more at risk because running, jumping, and squatting put more force on the patellar tendon. (For example, running can put a force of up to five times your body weight on your knees.)
  • Long periods of intense sports training are associated with jumper’s knee.

Pain and tenderness at the base of your kneecap are usually the first symptoms of patellar tendonitis. You may also have some swelling and a burning feeling in the kneecap. Kneeling down or getting up from a squat can be especially painful.

The pain may at first be sporadic, occurring only after sports or exercise activity. As the tendon becomes more damaged, the pain can become progressively worse. It can interfere with any athletic activity, as well as with daily activities, such as climbing stairs or sitting in a car.

What is it? Iliotibial band syndrome is inflammation of the Iliotibial band on the outside of the knee as it rubs against the outside of the knee joint. Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS) is one of the most common causes of hip and/or knee pain among athletes.

Symptoms of ITBS. Symptoms include pain over the outside of the knee which will come on gradually over time getting progressively worse until running must stop. Typically the athlete will rest for a period of time until symptoms go only for them to return so far into a run when training resumes.  The pain is caused from swelling or inflammation of a muscle group, the tendons that attach muscles to the knee or hip, and/or the bursa that surrounds the attachments at the hip and/or knee.

What is the clinical presentation? Typically, ITBS presents with a history of pain with activity (walking, running, cycling, etc.), with soreness at the outside of the knee just above the joint. Pain can radiate up or down and include the hip and/or ankle. Climbing steps and running downhill are common irritating activities. Rest can help alleviate symptoms in the short term but isn’t a long-term remedy.
